An ocean away, from the rain slick streets of Manchester, UK, our friend Steve Hancock shares some of his wisdom about songwriting, and a new tribute song to the late, great David Bowie.

My ultimate goal would be to plant one of my songs in the nepotistic soil of the music industry, where hopefully it will take root and flower into a song that the public get to hear and hopefully enjoy. With the help of Trystan and his great team, I feel I’m giving myself the best chance.

Question#1: The Starman was written as a tribute to the legendary David Bowie. Would you say he was a strong influence in your songwriting?

Although David Bowie played a big part in my life, I can’t say he’s an influence on my songwriting, apart from “The Starman” of course. He was the main reason I became interested in music, which in turn I suppose got me interested in songwriting.

Question#2: Since you first started songwriting, what do you see as some of the the biggest changes in audience perception?

I think music success these days is mainly influenced by the young. I sometimes wonder if it’s the songs, or the artists themselves that are the main attraction. Don’t get me wrong, there are some great songs still being written and there are some fantastic songs that deserve to top the charts, but never do because they are competing with some reality tv band, or singer that is blocking their way.

Question#3: Would you like to share a tip about songwriting to new songwriters out there?

The only tip I can give to new songwriters is first and foremost, do it for yourself. Do it because you enjoy the art of songwriting. We would all love to be a successful songwriter. Don’t let reality get you down – just persevere and keep on writing. After all, it’s what we love to do. To give your songs the best chance in life, I can highly recommend working with demomysong. They will take your songs to another level.

Question#4: Are you working on any new music right now? What’s your next plan?

Whenever I have spare time, I’m always searching for that elusive song hidden somewhere on the fretboard. What I really need to do is become a more tidy songwriter. What I mean by that is I have potential song snippets all over the place on different recording devices, so I really need to put them all in one place. Also I will be working with Trystan and his team on new material in the near future.

Cool song, great vocal & production!
Liked your personal-engagement with the girl being affected by his death and you the onlooker. It pulled me into the story very effectively!
