The Air Between | Interview with Peter Haxby

Peter Haxby is a songwriter/guitarist living in Perth, Australia. His father was a pianist and so music was ever-present in the early years of his life. This played a significant role in Peter’s music path as a songwriter. Peter has a unique songwriting style, forged from a strong influence of the ever changing tunes of the 60’s traditional Blues & Rock. Peter’s new album “The Air Between” has a mixed genre of tunes, which was born and inspired by life experiences and the fervor of human emotion.

What is the story behind the song “The Air Between”?

“The Air Between” is more than a love song. It depicts the space created by two souls who find a love connection. What is love, if not at first a desire to connect? The cover of my album illustrates that earthy yet unworldly place that connects two souls, The Air Between.

What inspires your music?

I think it is the human element of emotion, the passion, the heart-ache, and the anger. The face of emotion wears many masks, but the soul is pure, it cannot lie. I like to write about that soul.

“The soul is pure. It cannot lie. I like to write about that soul.”

How long have you been writing songs?

I first started writing songs when I was around 16. I would change the words of established songs to words that I liked, it just started from there.

What does music mean to you personally?

Music is as much a part of my life as breathing for me. I once read that some days you need the music and some days you need the lyrics, I think that is so true.

Does songwriting come easy to you?

Mmm, no, not always. Sometimes the song appears as a tune and sometimes as words. Once started though, you have to give yourself to that song.

How long did the album “The Air Between” take to complete?

About 18 months all up.

Were the songs on the album written in one place?

No, they were written in various places in the world. Traveling inspires my songwriting.

What did you find most difficult in writing the Album?

I did not find any difficulty, however the arrangement and tempo is vital. This is where working with the expert team at Demo My Song & 5050songs came in; they were sensational, helping to put each song together.

Are there certain artists that have influenced your songwriting?

Yes, quite a few artists, however the most significant would be: The Beatles, Bob Segar, Bruce Springsteen and Steve Winwood.

So where does Peter Haxby go from here?

Working with the talented team at 5050songs, I will continue to write songs and release them to the public. If one of my songs connects and means something special to one person, then I feel honored to have touched that soul with my music.

This compliment gives me the desire to write more songs. It is the best compliment that a songwriter can get, when your song touches someones heart. So thank you!
The arrangement of “The Air Between” was developed by Trystan and the team at Demo My Song from a spark of inspiration of the raw material.
Together we have created something special, I hope it means something special to you as it has for me as well.
      Pete 🙂
